Week 1 Module: Spiritual Emergency
Sedona, Arizona

Stan enters to a round of applause at his surprise retirement party.

Less than one week before the module, Stan and Cristina's house had burned down. They lost many things, not the least of which included innumerable rare, autographed books and his personal PC, with all of his most recent writings. Yet, days later, he showed up in Sedona for his final scheduled GTT training module, joking about how his suitcase contained just about everything he had left in the world. His story about the fire was very touching.

Because this was to be his final scheduled training module (although Tav was in a bit of denial about that all week), those of us at the module wanted to do something to commemorate the occasion, to honor this man whose life's work was so meaningful to us.

Minnesota Breathworker/Trainer Lynda Griebenow came up with the idea: A Retirement Variety Show. Anyone who wanted to contribute their talents was invited to do so. Soon, there was a Farewell-To-Stan production in process.

Viktoria Luchetti performed in mime to Nienke's reading of one of her most profound breathwork experiences. Scotty Johnson wrote some lyrics and offered to sing, and also spearheaded the effort to come up with some higgly pigglys. (Make sure you read the "Grof Transpersonal Training" song he wrote, written to the music of Hotel California). Colin Kelly, storyteller from Australia wrote (in his mind) "A Groffian Fairy Tale." June Katzen wrote a poem expressing her feelings about Stan's work. Maria sang a chant from her native Chile. Sheldon Norberg had recently published an autobiographical book, and improv-ed some excerpts from it. Arnold Bernstein had bought a painting that he found that had "Stan" written all over it, and he wanted to present it.

Somehow, Stan was kept in the dark about all the preparations, and on the final night of the training, Tav distracted Stan just enough to let us set everything up. He brought him back to the workshop room. The stage was set...
